Communion is the debut album from electro-pop group Years & Years, released on the 10 July 2015. The band are most well known for their singles King, Desire and Shine, all reaching high places in the charts. I wasn't hooked on the band straight away - I liked their music but I wouldn't actively seek it out to listen to it. Therefore, I wasn't sure what to expect from Communion but nonetheless I was blown away upon release day.

I particularly like how the album fits together, flowing into each track seamlessly despite not being mixed together. An example of this is the introductory track Foundation into the second track Real - I think the flow into the next track makes me like both tracks even more. Foundation begins the album with quite a slow pace as well being quite stripped regards to layering of sounds, before Real picks up the tempo but not by much.
My favourite tracks on Communion are Ties and Desire - honourable mention also goes to Border. Ties I feel is one of the most lively tracks off of the album despite not the tempo not being maintained throughout the entire song - the chorus is more upbeat than the verses with a lovely build up between the two sections. I also like how the song is put together as well as flowing into each section despite the change of tempo between the two. Ties is a really uplifting song for me as well as making me want to move about and sing along - it was also an instant favourite for me when I first heard their album.
Desire builds up the tempo and layering of various synths as the song progresses which I particularly like. Similar to the rest of the album, Desire is so easy to sing along to as well as being another uplifting song.
Border I particularly like the chorus as it contrasts the verses with its faster tempo and change of style. Because of this, I have often found that the chorus sticks in my head as opposed to the verses. The build up between the verse and the chorus is very subtle and slow however works really well with this song as well as the lyrics being uplifting and motivational.
In conclusion, I really like Communion for it's catchy songs, uplifting lyrics and brilliant continuity between tracks. It's an album that often puts me in a great mood and I hope you find it the same!
